Boiler
Various operationg pressure boilers have been used to generate steam for power generation, sterilizing products and others heating purposes for many decades since the invention of steam. A cost effective boiler water treatment program becomes a vital component of the whole plant.
Problems related are

Scaling and Deposition
As water is heated and converted into steam, contaminants in the make up water are left behind. As the cycles of concentration increase, the concentration of the contaminants also increase. Scale forms as a result of the precipitation of the mineral salts exceeded the solubility limit. Common scales found in the boiler system are calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate and silicates

Corrosion
In the boiler system, two types of corrosion are prevalent:-

  1. Oxygen pitting corrosion, seen on the tubes and in the preboiler section.
  2. Low pH corrosion, seen in the condensate return system.
Corrosion of either type can lead to failure of the boiler system, deposition of corrosion products and overall efficiency loss.

Carryover
Can be caused by either priming or foaming. Priming is the sudden eruption of boiler water due to mechanical conditions and foaming is due to excessive suspended solids, alkalinity, total dissolved solids or other inpurities. Both phenomena can cause failure on superheater tubes, turbine blades, condensate lines and etc.
